June 16th, 2008 admin No comments

1. leave no stone unturned (to do sth)

means: try every possible means; to try one’s best, to make every effort.

这个短语还可以写作:leave not any stone unturned或者 No stone was left unturned。

They left no stone unturned in their search for the child’s mother.

We’ll leave no stone unturned to accomplish the great task.
I am doing extensive research and I don’t want to leave any stone unturned.

To find the book I wanted Cindy left no stone unturned in the bookstore.

2. every second counts

means: every second is important.

The time of life is short. So, now every second counts.

The examination is just round the corner. From now on, every second counts!

The 7.9 magnitude tremor, which was focused in China’s Sichuan Province, is estimated to have killed at least 19,500 people — and that toll is expected to rise dramatically as rescue teams reach the most affected areas. In cities near the earthquake’s epicenter, over 26,000 people are buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings. One county is reporting that more than 80 percent of buildings have been destroyed.

The Chinese government estimates that as many as 3.5 million homes have been destroyed.

The earthquake was so powerful that skyscrapers swayed hundreds of miles away in Shanghai, and the shocks were felt as far away as Thailand and Vietnam.
